The purpose of this layer is to capture warmth through trapped air. This layer typically consists of a merino wool or fleece long sleeved jacket, but it can also be an insulating layer such as a thin down/synthetic jacket during extremely cold conditions. When choosing a mid-layer try to stay away from most general synthetic fibers as they aren’t as breathable as natural fibers, and they take a considerable amount of time to dry when wet.

Insulating Layer: whether synthetic or down, this layer provides extra loft and a higher warmth to weight ratio than other mid layers. Synthetic insulation is the best option when exposed to wet conditions, when down becomes wet it compresses and loses the ability to loft.
